A Journey By Boat

There's nothing quite like taking the 6:30am ferry from Vallejo to San Francisco. It's warm inside and ambient sounds abound: the soft chatter of commuters, the rustling flitter of newspapers and sippings of coffee, the low chugging drone of the engines... and beneath it all the perpetual living communication of water itself.

Everyone's still sleepy and their guards are down.

People are a strange bunch. We're communal animals who've forgotten the fact. We're fond of pecking orders and social strata even though we know we've evolved past their point of usefulness. We're all hoping to be liked but pretending we don't care.

Let's change it all. What have you got to lose by throwing yourself open to the world? Your dignity? Your self-respect? Nonsense. Someone will hurt your feelings? So what. Their opinion of you is simply this: an opinion. It has no bearing on your actual state and worth. It's probably off-base, too... colored by perceptions framed by the same insecurities we're talking about casting aside right now.

Believe me, it's not easy. Think for a moment: the main stumbling blocks to progress are the walls we erect between ourselves. The social taboos. The supposedly impenetrable barriers of hierarchy. The ability to speak openly and honestly with ourselves and others is a rare quality.

We all have it. We just don't use it.

Forget the advertising. Forget what "everyone knows to be true."

Forget your fears.

Open, rush out, and the world will rush in.
